Who We Are ~ Friends of Hot Springs Library/ Become a Friend

Friends of Hot Springs Library, or FHSL, is an all volunteer organization devoted to supporting the Hot Springs, North Carolina Library through fundraising, advocacy, author and educational events, building maintenance and community participation.  Some of us volunteer our time for library programs, events and maintenance. Some attend monthly meetings to plan upcoming and ongoing events and programs. Many of our Friends of Hot Springs Library contribute their support through yearly membership dues and donations.  We work together and do what we can to help keep our library a vibrant and lively part of the Hot Springs community.  We encourage you to join us in our efforts.

  • Purchase new technology equipment for patron use
  • Support Dr. Seuss Day, Lego Club and other library programs and events for the children and adults of our Hot Springs and surrounding communities

How To Join FHSL: Stop in the Hot Springs Library and ask a librarian for a membership form, fill out the info, leave it along with your membership dues with the librarian. Or, you can print the form, FHSL Membership Form, fill out the info and mail with your check to: P.O. Box 175. Hot Springs, NC 28743.

Madison County Public Libraries Receive ‘Best Small Library In America’ award for 2018 from Library Journal

Best Small Library in American 2018This is a national award given annually by   Library Journal to honor “the U.S. public library that most profoundly demonstrates outstanding service to populations of 25,000 or less.”

This is the 1st time a NC public library has received this prestigious recognition. Library Director Melanie Morgan accepted the award at the 2018 Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) Conference on Friday, September 14th in Springfield, IL. MCPLs are featured on the cover of the September 15, 2018 issue of Library Journal as well as online. Click HERE to view the full article.

While MCPLs are over the moon to be named Best Small Library in America, we know that we didn’t do it alone. Morgan says, “As the Library Director of the Madison County Public Libraries, I believe in the POWER of libraries, and their ability to transform lives in our community. Over the past four years I have had the honor to work with an amazing staff that shares that vision, and has helped transform the MCPLs into the Best Small Library in America.  I am grateful to the Library Trustees and Friends, County officials, and more importantly the residents of Madison County who continue to support that vision.  This award was won by all of us, and is a testament to what small and rural libraries can accomplish with community support.”

MCPLs truly appreciate the community partnerships that led to the creation of the outstanding programs that contributed to our success. These partnerships include Madison County Schools and Madison County entities like Partnership for Children and PAGE (Partnership for Appalachian Girls Education), AB Tech Community College and Mars Hill University as well as our 3 amazing Library Friends groups. But truly, MCPLs’ best partnership is with YOU—our valued community of almost 11,000 patrons that have a library card and use it. We share this award with you.

Our NEW HOT SPRINGS LIBRARY has become a vital and well loved part of our Hot Springs community.   We thank you for your ongoing support.  We are making headway!  The Friends of Hot Springs Library secured a loan to purchase the building for our Hot Springs  Library in early 2017.  We continue to ask for your monetary support to help us retire the remainder of our five year mortgage.  All operating expenses will be covered in the regular budget, so we can focus our efforts on debt retirement.  Every donation goes directly and fully to that goal.  With your support, we will reach our goal. No amount is too small (or too large!).  Every dollar helps get us closer.
